In compliance with the State of Alabama law (Senate Joint Resolution 62, Act No. 84-83), scoliosis screenings are required annually for public schools in the state of Alabama for students in grades 5 through 9. The purpose of the screening is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any spinal abnormalities that may require physician referral. School nurses (with assistance from the JSU Nursing program) will conduct these screenings for students in grades 7 - 9 during their pe class time, beginning on March 15, 2017.
The scoliosis screening is a simple screening, by a trained screener, to observe the child's posture when standing and bending forward. Separate, private rooms/areas will be provided for each student to allow for privacy during their individual screening. Girls may wear a halter-top, athletic bra or bra during the screening, and boys will remove their shirts. If scoliosis is suspected you will be notified by a mailed letter, with recommendation to follow-up with your physician.
If your child is currently receiving medical care for a spinal deformity from a physician, or if you wish to opt out of the screening, please complete a letter of exemption for the screening and turn that in to the school nurse. If you have any questions please call the school nurse at 256-782-8837.
